Discover more about Museo Regional

The Museo Regional de Iquique offers an insightful journey into the history and culture of the Tarapacá region of Chile. Founded in 1960 and managed by the Corporación Municipal de Desarrollo Social de Iquique, the museum is located in a historic building at 951 Baquedano. The museum's exhibits span from the region's earliest inhabitants to the impact of the nitrate industry. Key collections include paleontological artifacts, archaeological remains, and ethnographic items dating back to pre-Hispanic times. Visitors can explore mummies from the Chinchorro culture, some of the oldest artificially mummified bodies in the world, as well as textiles and tools from various indigenous groups. The ethnographic collection, known as Isluga, was declared a Historical Monument in 1983. The museum is divided into three main areas: anthropology, focusing on the evolution of indigenous cultures; the survival of the Aymara people in the highlands; and the nitrate era. Highlights include the original bust of Arturo Prat Chacón, collections from the War of the Pacific and the Civil War of 1891, and fossils discovered during oil exploration in the 1930s.
