Lahuen Ñadi Natural Monument, established on January 10, 2000, is a 2 km² protected area in the Los Lagos Region of southern Chile. Located a short distance from Puerto Montt, it serves as a sanctuary for the last vestiges of alerce forests in Chile's central valley. The name 'Lahuen Ñadi' reflects the area's characteristics: 'Lahuen' is the Mapudungun word for alerce, and 'ñadi' refers to the volcanic soils that shape the landscape. The monument protects endangered Fitzroya trees, also known as Patagonian cypress or alerce, some of which are over 1800 years old. These trees were heavily logged in the 18th and 19th centuries, making this monument a crucial refuge. The area's volcanic soils, known as ñadis, are very humid and filled with fluvioglacial sediments and Quaternary volcanic deposits. Visitors can explore the park via accessible trails, including the 600-meter Los Chucaos trail and the 2-kilometer Los Carpinteros trail. These trails wind through the ancient forest, showcasing the towering alerce trees and diverse flora such as cinnamon trees, coihues, and myrtles. The park is also home to various bird species, including the chucao and huet huet. The trails are wide and well-maintained, ensuring a safe and pleasant experience for hikers of all skill levels.
