Car
If you are driving, head towards Ushuaia in the Tierra del Fuego Province of Argentina. From Ushuaia, take Route 3 (the main road) south towards the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego. After approximately 11 km, turn left onto the dirt road leading to Laguna Esmeralda. This road is marked, but keep in mind that it can be rough and may require a 4x4 vehicle in some conditions. Look for the signs for Laguna Esmeralda as you approach. There is no fee to park at the trailhead.
Public Transportation
From Ushuaia, you can take a public bus that goes to the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego. Once you arrive at the park entrance, you will need to take a taxi or arrange for a transfer to the trailhead for Laguna Esmeralda, as public buses do not go directly to the lagoon. Expect to pay around 20-30 ARS for the bus fare to the park and about 100-200 ARS for the taxi to the trailhead. Make sure to check the bus schedules in advance as they can vary.
Hiking
Once you reach the trailhead, the hike to Laguna Esmeralda is approximately 6 km round trip and typically takes about 2-3 hours to complete. The trail is well-marked, but be prepared for varying terrain. It is advisable to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail. The trailhead is usually accessible year-round, but conditions can vary, so check the weather before you go.
