The Catedral de Valparaíso, located on Chacabuco Street in front of the traditional Plaza Victoria, serves as a prominent landmark in the administrative and commercial center of the city. The cathedral's story began in 1910 on land previously occupied by the palace of Juana Ross, which was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. Agustín Edwards Ross provided the funds for the construction of a church dedicated to Our Lady of Carmen. The initial construction was overseen by engineer Juan Tonkin and architects Cruz Montt and Ricardo Larraín Bravo. Work progressed steadily until 1913, when the project's main benefactor, Juana Ross de Edwards, passed away. The Diocese of Valparaíso was established in 1925, with Eduardo Gimpert as its first bishop. However, as the Cathedral was not yet complete, the Iglesia del Espíritu Santo served as a temporary place of worship. Construction continued at a slow pace, and the cathedral was finally inaugurated on January 29, 1950. The architecture blends a late-historic style with modern architectural approaches, balancing the neo-Gothic style of its facades and interior ornaments with the use of reinforced concrete, resulting in simple lines and volumetric freedom. The Catedral features a Latin cross plan with a central nave of triple height and two lower naves. A dome sits at the crossing, and a baptistery and bell tower add to the structure. The bell tower's height makes it a reference point in the area. The earthquakes of 1971 and 1985 caused significant damage, including the loss of the cupola. After these events, the church was reconstructed to closely resemble its original design. In the basement of the Iglesia is a crypt where the remains of bishops and distinguished locals are kept. Today, the Catedral de Valparaíso is not only a place of worship but also a significant historical and spiritual landmark within the city.
