Discover more about Palace of Cerro Castillo

Nestled on Cerro Castillo hill in Viña del Mar, the Palace of Cerro Castillo is a striking landmark that has served as the summer residence for Chilean presidents since 1930. The palace, envisioned by Graciela Letelier Velasco, the wife of President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, was designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style by architects Luis Browne and Manuel Valenzuela. The palace's architecture combines neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance elements, featuring an ornate facade and intricate detailing. While interior tours are limited, the palace grounds and exterior offer captivating views of the Pacific Ocean and meticulously maintained gardens. The gardens feature native flowers and towering Araucana trees, extending down the hillside. Declared a National Historical Monument in 2005, the palace is typically open to the public only one day a year, on National Heritage Day, the last Sunday of May. However, guided tours are available on Thursdays at specific times, offering insights into the palace's history and architectural features. The palace also serves as a cultural hub, hosting art exhibitions and concerts. A flag flying above the palace indicates the President is in residence.
