Aquarium Medellin at Parque Explora

The Aquarium Medellin, situated within Parque Explora, is one of South America's largest freshwater aquariums, holding 580,000 liters of water. This impressive aquarium is home to more than 2,000 organisms representing around 250 species, with a focus on aquatic life from the Amazon region. Visitors can observe a wide array of freshwater fish, including piranhas and the massive pirarucú, the second-largest freshwater fish in the world. The aquarium showcases diverse aquatic ecosystems, including rivers, flooded Amazonian forests, and coral reefs. In addition to freshwater species, the aquarium also features saltwater organisms such as clownfish, moray eels, anemones, jellyfish, sea urchins, and starfish. The three-story aquarium emphasizes the splendor and fragility of aquatic life, highlighting the threats they face from human activities like overfishing, mining, habitat destruction, and pollution. Parque Explora itself is an interactive science and technology museum, designed by architect Alejandro Echeverri, with over 300 interactive exhibits, a planetarium, and a vivarium. The museum's distinctive architecture features four red cubes that house science and technology rooms. Parque Explora aims to promote education and social transformation through engaging experiences.
