Discover more about Ermita de Jesús de Nazareno

Nestled in the historic center of Popayán, the Ermita de Jesús de Nazareno is a testament to the city's rich religious and cultural heritage. This iconic Catholic church, the oldest standing in Popayán, has been a beacon of faith since its establishment in 1612. Originally dedicated to Santa Bárbara and Santa Catalina de Alejandría, it was later dedicated to Amo Jesús Nazareno in 1660, becoming a revered patron of the city, especially among the indigenous communities. Perched atop a slight elevation, the Ermita offers a commanding view of the surrounding cityscape. Its location, initially outside the urban area, gained prominence in the 17th and 18th centuries due to the celebrations of Jesús Nazareno and Semana Santa. The church's architecture, though simple, has proven resilient, withstanding numerous earthquakes while retaining its original colonial Spanish style. The structure has served as Popayán's cathedral temporarily due to the constant earthquakes. Inside, the Ermita features a Baroque altarpiece crafted from wood and adorned with the triumphant eagles of Austria, dating back to the late 17th century. The retablo is complemented by a wooden pulpit, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship of the era. In the early 20th century, the church underwent renovations, including modifications to the roof and façade. A side chapel, dedicated to Cristo Rey, was added in 1937 but suffered damage in the 1983 earthquake.
