Housed in a beautifully preserved 18th-century neoclassical building, the Museo Arquidiocesano de Arte Religioso stands as a testament to Popayán's rich religious history and artistic heritage. Established in 1972 by Archbishop Miguel Angel Arce Vivas, the museum's mission is to protect, conserve, and exhibit a vast collection of religious art belonging to the Archdiocese of Popayán. The museum's collection spans from the 16th to the 20th centuries, featuring a diverse array of paintings, sculptures, and liturgical objects. Many pieces reflect the influence of the Quito School of art, showcasing a blend of European and indigenous artistic traditions. Among the highlights are the fourteen stunning custodias (monstrances), adorned with precious stones, considered one of the greatest artistic treasures of sacred metalwork in Colombia. Visitors can explore eleven exhibition rooms filled with religious art. The museum also offers guided tours, workshops, conferences and concerts.
