Discover more about Smuggler Mountain

Smuggler Mountain, located just east of Aspen, Colorado, is a prominent landmark offering stunning views and a glimpse into the area's rich history. The mountain's story mirrors that of Aspen itself, transitioning from a pristine landscape inhabited by the Ute people to a bustling center of silver mining in the late 1800s. The Smuggler Mine, established in 1879, was among the first mining claims in Aspen and became its most productive and longest-operating mine. In 1894, the mine yielded the world's largest silver nugget, weighing over a ton, solidifying Aspen's reputation as a world-class silver mining town. Remnants of this mining past, including old mine shafts and tailings piles, can still be seen along the trails. Today, Smuggler Mountain is a recreational haven, offering a network of trails for hiking, running, and mountain biking. The most popular route is the Smuggler Mountain Overlook Trail, a 2.8-mile round trip that leads to an observation deck with breathtaking views of Aspen, Aspen Mountain, and the surrounding Elk Mountains. The trail is moderately challenging, gaining approximately 800 feet in elevation, making it a great workout for locals and a memorable experience for visitors. The open space encompasses 300 acres, largely bounded by the White River National Forest, ensuring its preservation for future generations. The mountain provides a unique opportunity to witness ecological changes over time, as areas once denuded by mining activity have been reclaimed by forests. Whether seeking a challenging hike, a glimpse into Aspen's history, or simply a stunning view, Smuggler Mountain offers a rewarding experience for all.
