Walking

The Wheeler Opera House is centrally located in downtown Aspen at 320 E Hyman Ave, making it easily accessible on foot from most locations in the downtown area. From Rubey Park Bus Terminal, walk two blocks east on Durant Avenue, then turn left onto Mill Street and walk one block north to Hyman Avenue. The Opera House is on the corner of Hyman and Mill. No costs are associated with walking.
Public Transport

Aspen's public transportation, operated by Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA), offers free bus service within Aspen. The Rubey Park Bus Terminal, located two blocks from the Wheeler Opera House, is the central hub for RFTA. From the terminal, it's a short walk to the Opera House. Bus service from Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) to Rubey Park is free.

Located in the heart of downtown Aspen, the Wheeler Opera House has been a cultural landmark since its construction in 1889. Built by Jerome B. Wheeler, a prominent businessman and mining investor, the opera house reflected Aspen's prosperity during the silver boom. The building was designed by architect W.J. Edbrooke, who also designed the Tabor Grand Opera House in Denver.The Wheeler Opera House was the third-largest opera house in Colorado at the time. The building itself was a marvel, featuring steam heat and electric lighting, a brand-new technology for the time, making Aspen the first city west of the Divide to be wired for electricity. The interior boasted seats of Moroccan leather and an azure ceiling studded with silver stars. The building housed Wheeler's bank, the Aspen Mining and Smelting Company, and various shops on its lower floors.Over the years, the Wheeler Opera House has faced numerous challenges, including fires and periods of closure. After a fire in 1912, the building remained boarded up for decades. However, it was revived in the 1940s thanks to the efforts of Walter Paepcke and Herbert Bayer, who renovated the space. A major renovation in 1984 restored the opera house to its original Victorian facade.Today, the Wheeler Opera House continues to serve as a vibrant center for arts, entertainment, and community events. It hosts a wide range of performances, including concerts, films, festivals, lectures, and community events. The Wheeler also hosts the Aspen Music Festival and School's Opera Theatre program from mid-June to mid-August. Free guided tours are offered seasonally by the Aspen Historical Society.
