Driving
From Estes Park, drive west on Highway 36 to the Beaver Meadows Entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park. After entering the park, turn left onto Bear Lake Road and drive for 9 miles to the Bear Lake Trailhead. Note that a timed entry reservation may be required to access Bear Lake Road between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. from late May through mid-October. Parking at the Bear Lake Trailhead fills up quickly, especially during peak season. Consider using the free park shuttle from the Estes Park Visitor Center or the Park & Ride lot on Bear Lake Road.
Public Transport
During the summer, take the free Hiker Shuttle from the Estes Park Visitor Center to the Bear Lake Park & Ride. From the Park & Ride, transfer to the Bear Lake Shuttle, which runs every 10-15 minutes to the Bear Lake Trailhead. A reservation ticket is required for the Hiker Shuttle and costs $2.00 per reservation. A valid park entrance pass is also required. Cost: * Hiker Shuttle Ticket: $2.00 (reservation fee) * Park Entrance Pass: Varies depending on the duration of the visit
Walking
The final approach to Emerald Lake is a 3.6 mile hike from the Bear Lake Trailhead. From the trailhead, follow the signs to Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, and Emerald Lake. The trail is well-maintained but includes some rocky sections and a steady elevation gain. Cost: No additional costs are associated with walking to Emerald Lake once you have reached the Bear Lake Trailhead.
