Getting There

  • Shuttle

    To reach Dream Lake using the park's free shuttle, park at the Park & Ride near Glacier Basin Campground. From there, take the Bear Lake Shuttle. The shuttle runs frequently, approximately every 10-15 minutes, from late May to mid-October, with the first bus departing around 6:30 a.m. Get off at the Bear Lake Trailhead. From the trailhead, it's a 1.1-mile hike to Dream Lake. A timed entry permit, including access to the Bear Lake Road Corridor, is required to access the shuttle. The timed entry permit is $2.00.

  • Walking

    From the Bear Lake Trailhead parking lot, the trail to Dream Lake begins near the ranger station. Walk up the path approximately 200 feet to reach the first view of Bear Lake. Continue to follow the signs towards Nymph Lake and Emerald Lake. The trail is well-maintained and easy to follow. After passing Nymph Lake, continue another half-mile to reach Dream Lake. The total distance is 1.1 miles. Note that the trail is not paved.

Dream Lake, a high alpine lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, is a destination that lives up to its name, offering a vision straight out of a fairy tale. Located at the base of Hallett Peak, east of the continental divide, Dream Lake sits at an elevation of 9,905 feet (3,019 m). The 2.2-mile round trip hike to Dream Lake begins at the Bear Lake Trailhead and is a steady climb through aspen groves and ponderosa pine. Along the way, about half a mile in, hikers pass Nymph Lake, a charming lake filled with pond lilies that bloom throughout the summer. The trail then becomes a dirt path and begins a gentle climb towards Dream Lake. For a short stint the trail becomes more steep and demanding. On the way up, hikers will gain views of a vast landscape featuring the Keyboard of the Winds in Glacier Gorge and Longs Peak looming over everything but the distant sky. Just before reaching Dream Lake, the trail splits. The trail to the left takes hikers to Lake Haiyaha and the trail to the right leads to Dream Lake. Dream Lake, with the beautiful backdrop of Hallett Peak, is one of the most photographed scenes in Rocky Mountain National Park. At daybreak, light from the east illuminates the stone face and crags of Hallett, and Dream Lake returns the favor by mirroring its image in her waters. The lake is known for its views caused by surrounding steep cliffs, good location for winter snowshoeing, and is a destination for casual hiking. Many hikers choose to travel an additional half mile or so to Emerald Lake, with even more impressive views.
