    Getting There

    Driving

From Estes Park, drive south on Colorado Highway 7 for approximately 9 miles. Turn right onto Longs Peak Road and follow it for about 1 mile to the Longs Peak Ranger Station and Trailhead. Parking is limited and fills up very early, especially on weekends, so arrive as early as possible (before 4 a.m.). Parking is permitted along the roadside where allowed. There are no fees to park at the trailhead. During the summer, a free shuttle service connects Estes Park with the Park & Ride transit hub within the park. From there, you can access other destinations via the park's free shuttle system.

    Shuttle

During peak season (late May to mid-October), take the free Hiker Shuttle from the Estes Park Visitor Center to the Park & Ride transit hub inside Rocky Mountain National Park. Hiker Shuttle tickets are $2.00 per reservation. From the Park & Ride, transfer to the Bear Lake or Moraine Park shuttle. Note that the shuttle does not go directly to Longs Peak Trailhead. The first Hiker Shuttle departs from Estes Park at 8:30 a.m..

    Local tips

Start your climb early (between 1 and 3 a.m.) to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, which are common in the Rockies.
Check the Longs Peak Conditions Report on the Rocky Mountain National Park website for current conditions and potential hazards.
Acclimatize to the altitude before attempting the climb to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
Bring plenty of water (at least 4 liters), high-energy food, and appropriate clothing layers for changing weather conditions.
Be prepared to turn around if conditions deteriorate or you feel unwell. Summit fever can be deadly.

    Discover more about Keyhole Route

The Keyhole Route on Longs Peak is more than just a hike; it's a challenging mountaineering experience that draws thousands each year. Towering at 14,259 feet, Longs Peak dominates the Rocky Mountain National Park landscape and the Keyhole Route provides a non-technical (Class 3) passage to its summit during the summer months. The adventure begins at the Longs Peak Trailhead, ascending through a diverse landscape of forests and alpine tundra. The well-maintained trail gradually steepens, leading to the Boulder Field, a vast expanse of rocks and boulders. From here, a scramble leads to the Keyhole, a distinctive notch in the ridge offering breathtaking views into Glacier Gorge. Beyond the Keyhole, the route transforms into a more exposed and demanding climb. Marked by painted bullseyes, the path traverses narrow ledges, ascends the Trough (a steep gully), crosses the Narrows (a section with significant exposure), and culminates in the final scramble up the Homestretch to the summit. This section requires careful footing, route finding, and a tolerance for heights. While the Keyhole Route is a popular and rewarding climb, it's essential to recognize its inherent dangers. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and the route involves exposure to falling rocks, steep cliffs, and potentially icy conditions. Proper preparation, acclimatization, and awareness of the risks are crucial for a safe and successful ascent.
