Despite its name, it is technically a snowfield rather than a true glacier, as it doesn't move like a river of ice. Nevertheless, the area's stunning scenery and recreational opportunities make it a favorite among locals and tourists alike. The snowfield is nestled in a bowl-shaped depression within the Arapaho National Forest. It is believed to have formed around 7,000 years ago. The hike to the base of St. Mary's Glacier is a relatively short but moderately challenging trek. The trail is rocky and ascends steadily, gaining approximately 400 feet in elevation. The total distance to the lake is about 1 mile round trip, and hiking to the top of the glacier makes it 1.5 miles. Proper footwear with good traction is recommended due to the rocky terrain. In the summer, visitors can hike to the top of the snowfield and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The crisp blue ice and alpine scenery provide excellent photographic opportunities. St. Mary's Lake, located at the base of the snowfield, offers a picturesque spot for a picnic. Caution is advised during winter due to avalanche risks. While visiting, it's important to note that the land surrounding St. Mary's Glacier is a private covenant-controlled community.
