This popular trail, stretching two miles out and back for a total of four miles, offers an accessible and visually rewarding experience for hikers, bikers, and runners of all skill levels. The trail's origins trace back to the late 19th century when it was first conceived as a wooden irrigation canal, designed to supply water to Cañon City's orchards. In the 1890s, tunnels were carved into the granite cliffs to accommodate the canal. Later, in 1908, the tunnels were enlarged by prison laborers to create a scenic drive. The surrounding geology is remarkable, with 1.7-billion-year-old rocks showcasing ribbons of pink and white granite. Keep an eye out for the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, which runs parallel to the river below. You might even spot the train winding its way through the gorge.
