Discover more about Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods Park, a 1,341.3-acre natural wonder in Colorado Springs, is a testament to the power and beauty of geological forces. Millions of years in the making, the park's dramatic red rock formations tell a story of ancient seas, mountain ranges, and the earth-altering events that shaped the landscape. Originally called 'Red Rock Corral,' the area was later named 'Garden of the Gods' in 1859 by surveyors impressed by its grandeur. In 1909, the children of Charles Elliott Perkins, a railroad magnate, gifted 480 acres, including the iconic rock formations, to the City of Colorado Springs, ensuring it would forever remain a free public park. The park's towering sandstone formations, some reaching 300 feet, offer a variety of activities. Visitors can explore paved and unpaved hiking trails, enjoy mountain biking and horseback riding, or challenge themselves with technical rock climbing. Guided nature walks and educational presentations are available at the Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center, the park's gateway, where interactive exhibits bring the park's history, geology, and ecology to life. Garden of the Gods holds cultural significance, having been a neutral ground for Native American tribes such as the Apache, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, Lakota, Pawnee, Shoshone, and Ute. Archaeological evidence suggests that prehistoric people visited the area as early as 1330 BC. Today, the park continues to inspire awe and offers a sanctuary for both locals and tourists seeking connection with nature.
