Discover more about Balanced Rock

Balanced Rock is one of the most iconic and photographed features in Garden of the Gods. This massive sandstone boulder, standing 35 feet tall and weighing approximately 1.4 million pounds, appears to balance precariously on a narrow base, a testament to the power of natural erosion. The rock's reddish hue comes from hematite, a form of iron oxide. Formed over millions of years through the uplift of the Rocky Mountains and subsequent erosion, Balanced Rock has captured the imagination of visitors for generations. In the late 19th century, a local family even charged tourists to view the rock, before it eventually became part of the free public park in 1932. Today, Balanced Rock continues to be a popular spot for photographers, with many visitors posing to make it look as though they are holding the rock up. While some concrete was added to the base long ago to prevent tourists from chipping off pieces, the rock's balance is entirely natural. It is located near Steamboat Rock, with the pair sharing parking areas.
