Smuggler Mountain: Aspen's Iconic Overlook

Hike or bike up Smuggler Mountain for panoramic views of Aspen and a glimpse into the town's rich silver mining history.

Smuggler Mountain's story is interwoven with the history of Aspen itself. In 1879, during the initial silver rush, prospectors staked claims on the mountain, leading to the establishment of the Smuggler Mine, which became one of Aspen's most productive and longest-operating mines. In 1894, the Smuggler Mine yielded the world's largest silver nugget, weighing over 1,840 pounds, solidifying its place in mining history. Today, Smuggler Mountain is a recreational playground offering a network of trails for hiking, running, and mountain biking. The most popular route is the 1.5-mile climb to the observation deck. This trail follows Smuggler Mountain Road, a dirt road that winds its way up the mountainside, providing ever-increasing views of Aspen Mountain, Red Mountain, and the surrounding peaks. At the summit, the observation deck provides sprawling views of Aspen and the Elk and Sawatch mountain ranges. Remnants of the mountain's mining past, including old mine shafts, can be seen along the way. Smuggler Mountain remains a testament to Aspen's transformation from a silver mining town to a world-class resort destination.
