History of Cherry Creek

The Creek and Early Settlement

Cherry Creek takes its name from the waterway that runs through southeast Denver before joining the South Platte River. The creek corridor was part of the broader landscape used and travelled by Indigenous peoples, including Arapaho and Cheyenne communities, before American settlement transformed the area. Denver’s growth brought roads, property development and engineered changes to the creek, while the surrounding land gradually shifted from open space and semi-rural use towards residential and institutional purposes. The watercourse remained an important geographical marker even as the city expanded around it, giving the developing district a name and a natural corridor that still shapes recreation and movement today.

From Outlying Area to City Neighbourhood

As Denver expanded during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, land around Cherry Creek became increasingly connected to the city by roads and urban services.
