Getting There

  • Driving

    To reach West Elk Peak, start from Gunnison, Colorado. Drive west on US-50 for approximately 15.1 miles and turn north onto FR724 (Rainbow Lake Road). Follow this graded dirt road for about 11 miles to reach the Rainbow Lake Trailhead. Be aware that the road can be washboarded, so drive slowly and carefully. There are no fees to park at the trailhead, but a USFS permit might be required. Check current regulations before your visit.

  • Hiking

    From the Rainbow Lake Trailhead, follow the Rainbow Lake Trail (USFS #449) towards West Elk Peak. The hike is approximately 9 miles to the summit with a significant elevation gain. The trail is well-defined but can be strenuous. Be prepared for some Class 2 scrambling near the summit. No special equipment is needed during the summer months, but be sure to bring plenty of water and wear appropriate hiking gear.
