Discover more about Old Fall River Rd

Old Fall River Road, often called "The Old Road" by park staff, is a testament to early road-building ingenuity in Rocky Mountain National Park. Completed in 1920, it was the first road that allowed автомобили to penetrate the park's interior, linking Estes Park with Grand Lake. The road follows a path used for centuries by Native American hunters. The 11-mile road is a one-way, uphill-only route that begins near the Endovalley Picnic Area and climbs to Fall River Pass at 11,796 feet. The unpaved road is narrow and winding, with steep grades and sharp switchbacks. Vehicles longer than 25 feet are prohibited. Along the way, pull-outs offer opportunities to stop and admire the views. Notable stops include Chasm Falls, a 30-foot waterfall accessible via a short, steep trail. The road also passes through diverse ecosystems, from montane and subalpine forests to alpine tundra. Wildlife sightings are common, with elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and marmots frequently seen. The Alpine Visitor Center at the top provides restrooms, a gift shop, and a café.
