Getting There

  • Walking

    From the Colorado Welcome Center (3745 E Prospect Rd), the trailhead is directly accessible. Follow the soft surface trail southwest for about 1 mile to reach the White Pine Fire Lookout. The path is relatively flat and well-maintained, suitable for a leisurely walk. There are no fees associated with accessing the trail.

  • Public Transport

    While there isn't a bus stop directly at Running Deer Natural Area, Fort Collins Transfort offers free public transportation throughout the city. Check the Transfort website for the nearest bus routes and schedules. From the closest bus stop, you may need to walk or bike along Prospect Road to reach the natural area.   • Driving

    If driving, use the parking lot at the Colorado Welcome Center (3745 E Prospect Rd) or the parking lot on East Prospect Road (approximately 3301 Prospect Rd). From I-25, take exit 278 for Prospect Road and head east. The parking areas are well-marked. Parking is free.

Running Deer Natural Area, located in Fort Collins, Colorado, is a 40-acre preserve along the Cache La Poudre River corridor, offering visitors a peaceful retreat into nature. As its name suggests, the area is a haven for deer, with both mule deer and whitetail deer frequently spotted. Mule deer are identifiable by their large ears and black-tipped tails, while whitetail deer have smaller ears and wide, bushy tails. The natural area features approximately 2 miles of soft-surface trails suitable for hiking. These trails meander through diverse habitats, offering scenic views of the foothills and the surrounding landscape. A prominent feature is the White Pine Fire Lookout, the stabilized top of a fire lookout tower from White Pine Mountain, which served the area until 1967. It now functions as a wildlife viewing pavilion. Running Deer Natural Area also serves as a significant historical site. The confluence of the Poudre River and Boxelder Creek within the natural area was a key crossing point for early exploration parties in the 1800s. Today, visitors can explore the same paths taken by these early explorers. The area is open from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and provides free educational activities and events from June to October.
