Discover more about Balanced Rock

Balanced Rock, an iconic feature of Colorado Springs' Garden of the Gods, is a stunning example of natural artistry. This massive sandstone boulder, standing 35 feet tall and weighing approximately 1.4 million pounds, appears to be miraculously balanced on a small base. Its precarious stance has captivated visitors for generations, making it a favorite subject for photographs and a symbol of the park's unique beauty. Formed over millions of years by the uplift of the Rocky Mountains and subsequent erosion, Balanced Rock showcases the power of natural forces. The softer rock layers surrounding it were gradually worn away by wind and water, leaving behind the harder sandstone formation that we see today. The rock's red hue comes from hematite, a form of iron oxide. In the late 19th century, Balanced Rock became a paid tourist attraction when the Goerke family bought the land and charged visitors 25 cents to see it. This continued until 1932 when the City of Colorado Springs purchased the property and made it free to the public. Today, Balanced Rock remains a popular destination within Garden of the Gods, drawing crowds eager to witness its impressive size and seemingly impossible balance. Visitors often pose for photos, pretending to hold up or push the rock, creating lasting memories of their visit. Located near the southern entrance of Garden of the Gods, Balanced Rock is easily accessible and offers a convenient stop for those exploring the park. However, parking can be limited, especially during peak season, so arriving early is recommended.
