Discover more about Deer Mountain Trailhead

The Deer Mountain Trailhead marks the start of a popular and moderately challenging hike to the summit of Deer Mountain, a 10,013-foot peak within Rocky Mountain National Park. The trail is a 6.2-mile round trip, with an elevation gain of approximately 1,410 feet, making it a great option for hikers seeking panoramic views without tackling a more strenuous climb. The trail begins near Deer Ridge Junction, where U.S. Highways 34 and 36 meet on the east side of the park. The well-maintained path initially meanders through an open valley before ascending into a steeper, forested area. Switchbacks ease the climb as the trail becomes progressively rocky and uneven. As you approach the summit, a series of stone steps leads to the rocky peak. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views. To the east, the town of Estes Park nestles in the valley, while Longs Peak dominates the southern horizon. Views to the west reveal the rugged expanse of the Continental Divide. The summit provides ample space to relax and soak in the scenery. Be aware of afternoon thunderstorms, which are common in the Rockies, and plan to be back at the trailhead by noon. Deer Mountain's location in the montane forest zone means the summit remains below the treeline, surrounded by sweet-smelling ponderosa pines. This makes it a good option when higher peaks are inaccessible due to snow. The trail is generally snow-free from late spring to early fall, offering a delightful hiking experience for visitors of all skill levels.
