Getting There

  • Driving

    Access to the Uncompahgre Wilderness is primarily via US Forest Service roads, many of which are unpaved and require high-clearance 4WD vehicles. From Lake City, head west on Second Street, which becomes Henson Creek Road/Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. To reach the Nellie Creek Trailhead (for Uncompahgre Peak), continue for 5 miles and turn onto Nellie Creek Road. This road is rough and may be impassable depending on creek levels. No fees are required for accessing the wilderness area or trailheads, but be aware that parking at trailheads can be limited, especially during peak season.

  • Hiking

    Once you arrive at a trailhead, hiking is the primary mode of transportation within the Uncompahgre Wilderness. Trails range in difficulty, with routes to Uncompahgre and Wetterhorn Peaks being popular but strenuous. Always stay on established trails to minimize impact on the environment. No permits are required for entry, but it is advisable to fill out a self-registration form at the trailhead. The Uncompahgre Wilderness, a protected area in the north-central San Juan Mountains of Colorado, beckons adventurers with its dramatic landscapes and untamed beauty. Encompassing 102,721 acres, the wilderness spans across the Uncompahgre National Forest and Bureau of Land Management lands. Elevations range from 8,400 feet to the summit of Uncompahgre Peak at 14,309 feet. The area's name comes from the Ute word Uncompahgre, which some translate to mean "dirty water". This wilderness boasts two fourteeners: Uncompahgre Peak and Wetterhorn Peak. Uncompahgre Peak's unique, broad, flat summit is a landmark visible from afar, with its steep drops on three sides. Wetterhorn Peak, southwest of Uncompahgre, offers challenging climbs. Within the Uncompahgre Wilderness, hikers can explore diverse terrains, from the alpine tundra to the forested canyons. The American Flats, south of Wildhorse Peak, provide gentler hiking. Numerous forks of the Cimarron River flow through the wilderness, creating a network of waterways. These streams and small lakes are home to various trout species, attracting anglers. Wildlife includes elk, deer, black bear, and bighorn sheep. Established in 1980, the Uncompahgre Wilderness preserves a space for challenging recreation and solitude. Visitors can explore over 110 miles of trails, though many are minimally maintained.
