Getting There

Driving
Access to the Uncompahgre Wilderness is primarily via US Forest Service roads, many of which are unpaved and require high-clearance 4WD vehicles. From Lake City, head west on Second Street, which becomes Henson Creek Road/Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. To reach the Nellie Creek Trailhead (for Uncompahgre Peak), continue for 5 miles and turn onto Nellie Creek Road. This road is rough and may be impassable depending on creek levels. No fees are required for accessing the wilderness area or trailheads, but be aware that parking at trailheads can be limited, especially during peak season.

Once you arrive at a trailhead, hiking is the primary mode of transportation within the Uncompahgre Wilderness. Trails range in difficulty, with routes to Uncompahgre and Wetterhorn Peaks being popular but strenuous. Always stay on established trails to minimize impact on the environment. No permits are required for entry, but it is advisable to fill out a self-registration form at the trailhead. Remember to bring plenty of water, as sources may be unreliable, and be prepared for sudden weather changes.
