Getting There

  • Driving

From Lake City, drive west on Second Street, which becomes Bluff Street and then Henson Creek Road/Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. Continue for 5 miles to the Nellie Creek Road sign. Turn right onto Nellie Creek Road (FR877), a rough 4WD road. If you don't have a high-clearance 4WD vehicle, park here. Otherwise, drive 4 miles up Nellie Creek Road to the Nellie Creek Trailhead. Parking at either trailhead is free. Be aware that the Nellie Creek Road is narrow and rocky, with limited turnaround spots.

The trail ascends through meadows and spruce-fir forest, eventually leading to switchbacks up the mountain's south ridge. The final section involves a short, steep scramble to the summit.

Discover more about Uncompahgre Peak

Uncompahgre Peak, standing at 14,316 feet (4,363.46 m), is the sixth-highest summit of the Rocky Mountains and the highest point in the San Juan Mountains. Located in the Uncompahgre Wilderness, approximately 7 miles (11 km) west of Lake City, Colorado, it is a prominent fourteener known for its broad summit plateau and breathtaking vistas. The name "Uncompahgre" comes from the Ute word meaning "red water spring" or "dirty water," likely referencing the numerous hot springs near Ouray. The mountain's first recorded ascent was in 1874 by Albert R. Ellingwood, accompanied by William N. Byers and Charles C. Parry. Geologically, Uncompahgre Peak is of volcanic origin, though it is not a volcano itself. The mountain is composed of Precambrian gneiss and schist, resulting in its rugged terrain. The standard route, the South Ridge, is a Class 2 climb, making it accessible to well-acclimated and reasonably fit hikers. The hike involves a strenuous climb with an elevation gain of approximately 3,000 feet (914 m) from the upper trailhead. The final ascent to the summit involves navigating steep switchbacks and a section of loose rock, adding to the challenge. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains, including neighboring peaks like Matterhorn Peak and Wetterhorn Peak. The area is also popular for dispersed camping, with several options along Henson Creek Road and near the trailheads.
