The Klein Memorial Auditorium, located at 910 Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport, Connecticut, has been a cornerstone of the city's cultural landscape since its opening in 1940. This 1,447-seat proscenium theater, one of only seven Broadway-sized stages remaining in Connecticut, was built with funds willed to the city by Jacob B. Klein (1862-1932), a lawyer and active supporter of Bridgeport community organizations. The auditorium stands as a testament to Klein's vision for the "improvement and entertainment of the People of Bridgeport".
Designed by local architect Leonard Asheim, the Klein showcases striking Art Deco architecture, featuring bronze doors, a marble lobby, inlaid wood, and geometric motifs. Throughout its history, the Klein has hosted a wide array of performances and speakers, including Leonard Bernstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., and B.B. King. Today, the Klein continues to present diverse talents, from symphonies and concerts to dance recitals and community programs.
The Klein is also home to several resident companies, including the Greater Bridgeport Symphony, ConnectUs, Greater Connecticut Youth Orchestras, and the Fairfield County Children's Choir. Additionally, the Klein operates Klein Theatre Arts, a tuition-free after-school arts program for Bridgeport students. Walking
From the Bridgeport Transit Center, walk east on Water Street, then turn left onto Fairfield Avenue. Continue on Fairfield Avenue for about 0.7 miles. The Klein will be on your left at 910 Fairfield Avenue. Allow approximately 15 minutes. No cost.
Public Transport
From the Bridgeport Transportation Center at 1000 Water Street, take the Greater Bridgeport Transit (GBT) bus. Several routes serve the area near The Klein. Check the GBT website or app for the most up-to-date schedules and routes. The fare is $1.75 for 120 minutes of unlimited rides.
Driving
From I-95 North, take Exit 27 and follow signs for Lafayette Boulevard. Turn left onto Fairfield Avenue, and continue for several blocks. From the Merritt Parkway, take Exit 47 and head south on Park Avenue. Turn right onto Fairfield Avenue. The Klein is located at 910 Fairfield Avenue. Parking is available in the lot across the street from The Klein for $5. Parking charges may vary per event.
