Overlooking Hartford's Bushnell Park, the Connecticut State Capitol is more than just a pretty building; it's the heart of Connecticut's government and a monument to the state's rich history. Completed in 1878, the Capitol stands as a prime example of High Victorian Gothic architecture in the United States, constructed from New England marble and granite and crowned by a dazzling gold-leaf dome. Designed by architect Richard M. Upjohn, the Capitol replaced the Old State House as the primary seat of government, a move finalized after Hartford successfully vied to become the state's sole capital. The building's exterior is adorned with statues, medallions, and intricate carvings, reflecting the artistic sensibilities of the late 19th century. Inside, visitors can explore the Senate Chamber, the Hall of the House of Representatives, and the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Secretary of the State. The Capitol's grounds and interior are filled with historical artifacts and symbolic artwork. The building itself acts as a memorial to the Civil War, with galleries displaying battle standards of Civil War units. Though the original statue that topped the dome, named *The Genius of Connecticut*, was removed after hurricane damage and later melted down for the war effort during World War II, a bronze-coated plaster statue is on display. Free tours, offered by the League of Women Voters, provide insights into the Capitol's architecture, art, and political history. Self-guided tour booklets are also available for those who prefer to explore at their own pace.
