Discover more about Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch

The Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch, a defining landmark of Hartford, Connecticut, stands proudly in Bushnell Park as a tribute to the city's citizens who served in the American Civil War. Dedicated on September 17, 1886, the arch memorializes the 4,000 Hartford residents who bore arms, including the 400 who died for the Union cause. It holds the distinction of being the first permanent memorial arch erected in the United States. Designed by Hartford architect George Keller, the arch showcases an eclectic blend of Gothic and Romanesque Revival styles. Constructed with Portland brownstone, the monument features detailed terra cotta friezes. The northern frieze, sculpted by Samuel Kitson, portrays scenes from the Civil War, while the southern frieze by Casper Buberl, depicts the return of soldiers to Hartford, welcomed by the city represented as a noble female figure. Six statues, crafted by Albert Entress, stand at the base of each tower, representing the diverse trades of Hartford's war participants: a farmer, blacksmith, mason, student, carpenter, and a freed slave breaking his chains. The arch is topped with replica bronze sculptures of angels, Gabriel and Raphael, which replaced the original terra cotta figures that were damaged by weather. Visitors can ascend the 97-step stairwell inside the towers to enjoy views of Bushnell Park, the Capitol, and downtown Hartford. The ashes of George Keller and his wife, Mary, are interred within the east tower, adding a personal touch to this historic monument. The arch marks the entrance to what was once the bridge that crossed the Park River. Today, spanning Trinity Street, it often serves as a starting or ending point for city parades.
