  • Public Transport

    To reach the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center via public transport, take the 2 or 3 subway to the Central Park North–110th Street station. From there, walk east into the park. The subway fare is $2.90 per ride.

    From Midtown Manhattan, a taxi to the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center will cost approximately $28-$35 and take around 15 minutes. Note that taxi fares in New York City start at $3.00, with additional charges per mile and time. There may also be surcharges depending on the time of day and location.

  • Walking

    If you are already in the northern part of Central Park, you can easily walk to the Dana Discovery Center. From the West 110th Street entrance at Lenox Avenue, walk east into the park. Follow the path along the Harlem Meer to reach the center. There is no cost for walking.

Nestled on the northeast corner of the Harlem Meer, the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center stands as Central Park's only environmental education center. Since opening in 1993, this welcoming building has served as the Upper Park's visitor center, offering a wide array of free family and community programs. The center's Great Hall hosts seasonal exhibits, often in collaboration with other city cultural institutions. Visitors can explore exhibits on geological foundations, military history, and park restoration. A small deck outside the Great Hall provides an unobstructed view of the park's landscape to the south. The Dana Discovery Center is named after Charles A. Dana, a journalist and Assistant Secretary of War during the Civil War. Dana was the editor of the New York Tribune and is remembered as the owner of the New York Sun. Visitors can borrow fishing poles for catch-and-release fishing in the Meer or participate in community programs and holiday celebrations. Kids can borrow Discovery Kits filled with field guides, binoculars, and sketch paper. The adjacent plaza hosts events throughout the year, including the Harlem Meer Performance Festival.
