Discover more about Rumsey Playfield

Rumsey Playfield, located on the east side of Central Park near 71st Street and 5th Avenue, has a rich and varied history. The site was initially intended as an exhibition and music hall in the park's original design. However, it later became home to the Casino, a restaurant designed by Calvert Vaux. In the 1920s, the Casino transformed into a glitzy nightclub that attracted prominent figures. In 1935, Robert Moses, the Parks Commissioner, ordered the Casino's demolition and replaced it with the Mary Harriman Rumsey Playground, named after philanthropist Mary Harriman Rumsey. A statue of Mother Goose was erected near the entrance in 1938. In the 1980s, the area was converted into a sports field, and in 1990, SummerStage, a renowned outdoor concert and performance series, took over the venue. Today, Rumsey Playfield is a popular destination for live music and other events, offering a unique experience within the beautiful setting of Central Park. It is wheelchair accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy the performances. The venue can accommodate a large crowd, creating an energetic atmosphere, especially during concerts. Visitors can bring food and non-alcoholic beverages to free shows, making it a perfect spot for a picnic and entertainment.
