    Discover more about The Ramble

Nestled in the middle of Central Park, between 74th and 79th Streets, The Ramble offers a unique escape from the city. This 38-acre woodland, a key part of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's original design, was intended to recreate the experience of the Adirondacks or Catskills. The Ramble's intricate network of paths encourages exploration and a sense of discovery, while its dense plantings and varied topography create a sense of seclusion. Originally conceived as a "wild garden," The Ramble has a rich history, dating back to the park's early days. One of the first sections of the park to open to the public, it quickly became a popular destination for those seeking respite from urban life. The Ramble's design includes rustic bridges, a stream called "The Gill" that flows into the lake, and diverse plant life. Once, a cave known as the Ramble Cave or Indian Cave existed within the Ramble, but its entrances were sealed in 1934. Today, The Ramble is renowned as one of the best birdwatching spots in the United States. Its location along the Atlantic Flyway makes it a prime stopover for migrating birds, with over 200 species spotted annually. Birdwatchers can be seen throughout the area, especially near the Gill, hoping to catch a glimpse of warblers, woodpeckers, and other avian visitors. The Central Park Conservancy has undertaken significant restoration efforts to sustain The Ramble's landscapes, ensuring its continued role as an urban oasis.
