Discover more about Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre

The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre, located in Central Park near West Drive and 79th Street, is a unique and enchanting destination. The cottage has a fascinating history, beginning as a Swedish schoolhouse exhibit at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Frederick Law Olmsted, the co-designer of Central Park, was captivated by the building's Scandinavian architecture and craftsmanship and brought it to Central Park in 1877. Initially, the cottage served various purposes, including a tool shed, a comfort station, and even an entomological laboratory. However, in 1947, it found its true calling when it became home to a traveling marionette company. In 1973, the cottage was renovated to include a permanent theater designed specifically for marionette performances. Today, the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre continues to delight audiences with its innovative marionette productions based on classic children's stories. Talented puppeteers write their own scripts, design and construct the marionettes, and produce each show. The theater itself is a whimsical space, featuring Scandinavian details, seating for 100, and a state-of-the-art stage. The Swedish and American flags flying from the roof make the building easily recognizable. The City Parks Foundation manages the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre. In addition to performances at the Swedish Cottage, the City Parks Foundation also has a CityParks PuppetMobile that presents free shows and puppet-making workshops in parks, recreation centers, and schools throughout New York City.
