Discover more about Lighthouse Point Park Carousel

The Lighthouse Point Park Carousel, nestled within Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven, Connecticut, offers a delightful escape into a bygone era. This beautifully restored carousel, dating back to 1916, stands as one of less than 100 still operating today, a testament to its enduring charm. Once, there were over 10,000 such carousels. The carousel boasts 72 hand-carved figures, including horses, dragon chariots, and a camel, all mounted on a 60-foot platform. Each horse is unique, with different colors, characters, and details, and even named. The outer rim showcases original oil paintings depicting local scenes of New Haven, along with boats, trains, mermaids, and lighthouses. A Stinson organ provides the carousel's music, complete with a miniature of George Washington directing with a baton. Originally an outdoor carousel, it was moved indoors to a Renaissance Revival-style building in 1916 to protect it from the elements. In the 1980s, a community effort restored the carousel, and it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Beyond the carousel, Lighthouse Point Park offers stunning views of Long Island Sound, a sandy beach, hiking trails, a splash pad, and a bird sanctuary. The park's 82 acres provide a perfect blend of history, recreation, and natural beauty.
