Discover more about Lake Compounce Amusement & Water Park

Lake Compounce isn't just an amusement park; it's a living piece of American history. Founded in 1846 by Gad Norton, the park's origins trace back to a failed science experiment that drew curious onlookers. Norton recognized the potential and opened the area for public swimming, rowing, and lakeside concerts. Over the decades, Lake Compounce evolved from a humble picnic spot to a full-fledged amusement park, weathering economic depressions and cultural shifts. Today, Lake Compounce boasts over 50 rides and attractions, including the Wildcat, one of the world's oldest operating wooden roller coasters, and Boulder Dash, a wooden coaster that has been voted #1 for five consecutive years. In addition to the thrilling rides, visitors can cool off at Crocodile Cove, Connecticut's largest water park, which is included in the price of admission. The park also hosts seasonal events like Phantom Fall Fest and Holiday Lights, providing year-round entertainment. Lake Compounce has seen many changes in ownership throughout its history. From the Norton and Pierce families to Hershey Corporation and Kennywood Entertainment, each owner has contributed to the park's growth and evolution. Today, Lake Compounce is owned by Herschend, continuing its legacy as a premier destination for family fun. The park's name is derived from Chief John Compound, a Native American leader who conveyed the lake to white settlers in 1684. Legend says that Chief Compound drowned in the lake while trying to cross it in a large brass kettle.
