Discover more about Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch

Spanning Trinity Street in Bushnell Park, the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch is a lasting symbol of Hartford's dedication to honoring its Civil War veterans. Designed by Hartford architect George Keller, the arch was erected to commemorate the 4,000 Hartford citizens who served, including the 400 who died for the Union cause. Dedicated on September 17, 1886, the arch quickly became a celebrated tribute to Civil War veterans. The arch's architecture uniquely blends Gothic and Romanesque revival styles with classical elements. Constructed with Portland brownstone and embellished with gray terra cotta, the arch features two medieval towers connected by a classical frieze. The north frieze, sculpted by Samuel Kitson, depicts scenes from the Civil War, while the south frieze, by Casper Buberl, portrays Hartford welcoming its soldiers home. Six eight-foot-tall statues adorn the towers, representing the diverse trades of Hartford's war participants: a farmer, blacksmith, scholar, mason, carpenter, and a freed slave. The arch is also crowned by two angels, Gabriel and Raphael, originally made of terra cotta but replaced with bronze replicas in 1987 after weather damage. Visitors can explore the arch through guided tours and climb its 97-step stairwell for panoramic views of Bushnell Park and downtown Hartford. The ashes of George Keller and his wife, Mary, are entombed within the east tower, further connecting the architect to his enduring creation.
