Situated in the last remaining steamboat warehouse on the river, a building dating back to 1878 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the museum offers a variety of exhibits, programs, and events throughout the year. Visitors can explore three floors of exhibits detailing over 12,000 years of history, from the experiences of Indigenous tribes to the arrival of Europeans and the rise of industry and recreation. Exhibits include a replica of the Turtle, the first American submarine, and displays about the British raid on Essex during the War of 1812. The museum also hosts seasonal cruises on the Dutch yacht Onrust and the research vessel RiverQuest, offering opportunities to experience the river's beauty and wildlife. The museum was established in 1974. Today, the Connecticut River Museum is a private, not-for-profit, educational institution. The museum's collection includes manuscripts, books, art, and artifacts of regional significance.
