Discover more about Gillette Castle State Park

Gillette Castle State Park, straddling East Haddam and Lyme, Connecticut, is a testament to the imagination of William Gillette (1853–1937), the celebrated actor known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. Constructed between 1914 and 1919, with additions in 1924, the 24-room stone mansion, reminiscent of a medieval castle, sits atop the southernmost hill in the Seven Sisters chain, offering breathtaking views of the Connecticut River. Gillette, a Hartford native, personally designed the castle and oversaw every detail of its construction. The 14,000-square-foot structure, initially named Seventh Sister, features unique elements like hand-hewn southern white oak woodwork, carved wood light switches, and 47 distinct doors with individual puzzle locks. The interior design reflects the craftsman aesthetic popularized by Gustave Stickley. The 184-acre park includes the remains of Gillette's quarter-scale, narrow-gauge railroad, which once transported guests around the estate. Visitors can explore the walking paths with near-vertical steps, stone-arch bridges, and wooded trestles. The park also offers scenic views, hiking trails, and picnic spots. After Gillette's death in 1937, Connecticut acquired the property in 1943, renaming it Gillette Castle State Park. The park opened to the public in 1944 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Today, the park attracts approximately 300,000 visitors annually, eager to immerse themselves in history, architecture, and nature.
