Getting There

    From Tengatangi Village, head south on the main road. Look for a dirt road leading to the Three Grottos. The walk is about 20 minutes on a relatively flat path.

  • Car

    From the main village of Atiu, drive south on the main road towards Tengatangi Village. Continue for about 10 minutes until you see the sign for Three Grottos. Turn left onto the dirt road to the site, where a small parking area is available.

The Three Grottos are a must-see attraction on the island of Atiu, Cook Islands, offering a unique blend of coastal scenery and natural rock formations. Located near Tengatangi Village, these grottos are accessible via a reef walk at low tide or a short trail from the roadside. Despite being called the Three Grottos, there are two main crevasses/sinkholes that capture the attention of visitors. The reef walk to the grottos begins at Oneroa Beach on the southeastern side of Atiu. During low tide and calm weather, you can stroll through knee-deep, crystal-clear waters for about 30-45 minutes to reach the grottos. This perspective offers a unique way to experience the island. Alternatively, trails marked along the main road north of Oneroa Beach lead to clifftop viewpoints of the 'crevasse' grotto. Another 200m north, marked by a cross on a coconut tree, is a trail to a large circular opening in the cliffs. The grottos themselves feature crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and photography. The vibrant marine life around the grottos also provides opportunities for snorkeling and observing the underwater world. The surrounding lush greenery enhances the sense of tranquility and connection with nature. As the sun sets, the grottos take on a magical quality, creating unforgettable memories.
