Highland Paradise, also known as 'the lost village', is a cultural center located in the lush Maungaroa Valley of Rarotonga's Arorangi district. This site was once home to the Tinomana tribe, and the village was abandoned in the early 1800s with the arrival of Christianity. Today, descendants of the original inhabitants have revitalized the area, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the Cook Islands' past.Visitors can explore the 25-acre developed area, a small part of the original 205-acre site, which features reconstructed buildings and re-installed artifacts that depict village life from centuries ago. Knowledgeable guides share stories of ancient legends, cultural practices, and the history of the Tinomana Ariki (High Chief).     Public Transport

    To reach Highland Paradise by public transport, take the Rarotonga Bus from the Avarua bus terminal. Catch either the clockwise or anti-clockwise bus that stops in Arorangi. A one-way ticket costs NZD 5. Ask the driver to drop you off at the nearest stop to Maungaroa Drive, from where it is a 10-minute walk to Highland Paradise.

    Taxi

    Taxis are readily available throughout Rarotonga. A taxi from Avarua to Highland Paradise will cost approximately NZD 30-50. From the airport, expect to pay around NZD 25 per person. Be sure to confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey.

    Driving

    Highland Paradise is located off Maungaroa Drive in the Arorangi District. From Avarua, follow the main road west towards Arorangi. Turn onto Maungaroa Drive and follow the signs to Highland Paradise. Ample parking is available on-site.
