Te Rua Manga (The Needle)

Hike to Rarotonga's iconic Te Rua Manga (The Needle) for breathtaking panoramic views and a glimpse into the island's volcanic past and rich legends.

4.5

Te Rua Manga, or The Needle, is an iconic natural landmark located in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. This towering rock formation is not only a natural marvel but also steeped in local legend. According to folklore, the Needle was formed when the great god Tangaroa threw a spear into the earth, creating this striking spire. The Needle's spire is a breccia structure, a testament to the island's volcanic past. Approximately 1.5 million years ago, the volcano at the center of Rarotonga collapsed, forming a caldera and leaving behind the peaks we see today, including Te Rua Manga. Cracks filled with volcanic ash and rocks, which then solidified. Erosion eventually removed the loose material, shaping the near-vertical cylinder of rock that stands between 65 and 85 meters (213 and 279 feet) high. The hike to Te Rua Manga is a popular activity for visitors. The trail, approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) round trip, is considered moderately challenging due to its steep sections and uneven terrain. The ascent typically takes 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on fitness level and how long you linger to enjoy the views. Along the way, hikers are immersed in Rarotonga's lush rainforest, with opportunities to spot native birds and unique plant species. The best time to hike is during the cooler, drier months of May to October. Reaching the base of the Needle offers stunning panoramic views of Rarotonga and the surrounding ocean. The summit provides a killer spot for photos and really shows off the island's lush landscape.
