Discover more about VOLCAN ARENAL

Arenal Volcano, rising 5,437 feet (1,657 meters), is a sight to behold in Costa Rica's Northern Zone. Located within the Arenal Volcano National Park, it was the most active volcano in Costa Rica until 2010, drawing tourists from around the globe. Though currently in a resting phase, the volcano's imposing presence and the surrounding park offer a wealth of activities and natural beauty. The volcano's history is marked by a significant eruption on July 29, 1968, which tragically destroyed the towns of Tabacón and Pueblo Nuevo and resulted in 87 deaths. Before this event, Arenal had been dormant for hundreds of years, covered in rainforest and exhibiting minimal activity. The 1968 eruption created three new craters, one of which remains visible today. From 1968 to 2010, Arenal was consistently active, with frequent displays of smoke, ash, and lava flows. Today, visitors can explore the Arenal Volcano National Park, which spans nearly 30,000 acres of rainforest. Several trails, including Las Coladas, El Ceibo, and Los Tucanes, offer diverse perspectives of the volcano, Lake Arenal, and the surrounding flora and fauna. The park is open daily from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with an entrance fee of $15 USD for adults and $5 USD for children. The park is divided into two main sectors: the main visitor center with lava flow trails and the Peninsula Sector with views of Lake Arenal. Beyond hiking, the Arenal area is famous for its natural hot springs, heated geothermally by the volcano. Visitors can relax in the therapeutic waters of Tabacon, Baldi, and EcoTermales, among others, many of which offer stunning views of the volcano. Lake Arenal, Costa Rica's largest lake, also provides opportunities for boat trips and scenic views of Arenal.
