Inaugurated in 1995, the airport is named in honor of Daniel Oduber Quirós, who served as President of Costa Rica from 1974 to 1978 and championed the idea of building an airport in the region to boost tourism and economic development. As the gateway to the Costa Rican Riviera, also known as the Golden Coast, LIR offers a less crowded and smoother arrival experience compared to the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José.
