Getting There

Driving

From Liberia International Airport (LIR), take the old road towards Tamarindo. The drive is approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Follow signs for Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas. Note that while a 4x4 is not required to reach the main parking lot (near Hotel Las Tortugas), it is recommended for exploring other areas, especially during the rainy season. Parking is available near the beach.
Boat

From Tamarindo, take a taxi boat across the estuary to Playa Grande. Boats are available at the north end of Tamarindo beach. The boat ride costs approximately $1-3 USD one way. This is a quick and convenient option, especially for surfers staying in Tamarindo.
Public Transport

While there are no direct public buses to Playa Grande, you can take a bus from Liberia or other nearby towns to Huacas or Belen. From there, you can take a taxi to Playa Grande. The main break, located south of the beach access point at Hotel Las Tortugas, features fast, powerful waves suitable for shortboarders. For longboarders, the Casitas point or the estuary/river mouth at the south end of the beach are popular spots. The dry season (December-April) offers smaller, cleaner waves, while the rainy season (May-November) brings bigger swells and fewer crowds.Beyond surfing, Playa Grande is a crucial nesting site for leatherback sea turtles, the largest of the sea turtles, with nesting season typically running from October to March. Visitors can witness the nesting and hatching process by taking a guided nighttime tour with a national guide, which requires registration at the MINAE office with a passport and a fee. These tours are essential to protect the turtles and their nesting grounds.The area also boasts diverse ecosystems, including mangrove forests and estuaries, perfect for bird watching and wildlife exploration.
