Discover more about Fortuna Waterfall

La Fortuna Waterfall is one of Costa Rica's most visited and iconic natural attractions. Located just 5.5 km outside the town of La Fortuna, the waterfall plunges approximately 75 meters (246 feet) into an emerald green pool below. The falls are part of a 210-acre biological reserve within the Arenal Volcano National Park. The waterfall is formed by the Fortuna River, which originates in the Arenal Mountains and flows through lush rainforest. The area is managed sustainably by the Integral Development Association of La Fortuna (ADIFORT), a local non-profit organization. The entrance fees collected are reinvested into local conservation efforts and community projects, such as road infrastructure, schools, and public safety. To reach the waterfall, visitors descend a staircase of approximately 500 steps carved into the hillside. Along the way, there are resting areas and viewpoints to observe the surrounding rainforest, which is home to diverse wildlife, including toucans and monkeys. At the base of the falls, a spacious vantage point allows visitors to take in the beauty and power of the cascade. Swimming is permitted in the pool at the base of the waterfall, although caution is advised due to strong currents near the falling water. There is also a smaller, calmer pool for swimming. The water can be cold, but refreshing. La Fortuna Waterfall is not only a natural wonder but also holds cultural significance. The name "La Fortuna" translates to "the fortune" in English, and local legends say that swimming in its waters brings good luck. The waterfall is also considered a sacred site by the Maleku tribe, embodying their spiritual connection to nature.
