Discover more about Pre-Columbian Gold Museum

The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, officially known as Museo de Oro Precolombino Álvaro Vargas Echeverría, is a captivating journey into Costa Rica's rich indigenous heritage. Situated in a subterranean building beneath the Plaza de la Cultura in downtown San José, the museum houses an extraordinary collection of over 3,500 artifacts, including 1,586 gold objects, 1,922 ceramic pieces, 46 stone items, 4 jade pieces, and 9 glass or bead objects. These items, dating from 300-400 BC to 1550 AD, showcase the skills and techniques of cultures like the Nicoya, Diquis, and Chibcha. Gold, valued as a symbol of authority, wealth, and spiritual power, takes center stage with displays of jewelry, masks, sculptures, and ceremonial objects. Visitors can marvel at animal figurines—frogs, eagles, jaguars, and alligators—along with amulets, earrings, and statuettes that highlight the connection between these societies and their environment. A notable exhibit is El Guerrero, a life-sized gold warrior decorated with gold ornaments, displayed in a glass case. Another highlight is a replica of a pre-Columbian grave, discovered in the 1950s on a southeastern Costa Rican banana plantation, containing 88 gold objects. The museum also features the Museo Numismático (National Coin Museum), located in the same building, which explores Costa Rica's economic history with displays dating back to 1236, including coins, banknotes, and coffee tokens.
