Tortuguero + Pacuare (3 Days / 2 Nights)

3-day Tortuguero Expedition

Great!

We really enjoyed our three day, two night expedition to Tortuguero. Because we were staying just outside of San Jose, we had to meet up with the transport at 5:20 in the morning, before we drove around and picked everyone else up. After a 1.5-2 hour ride, including through the cloud forest of Braulio Carillo, we had a delicious breakfast in Siquirres before hopping on another 1.5 hour ride to the river/canals. Carla was our guide on the drive and was very informative and helpful. On the hour-long boat ride to Tortuguero we saw crocodiles and a basilisk and toucans. Once in Tortuguero, Roots took over our tour, providing accommodations and guides. Where we stayed had wonderful AC and delicious breakfasts. David (and his dog Sascha) gave us a great tour of the town and the next morning Fabien took us on a canoe tour and later a walking tour through the national park, pointing out and teaching us about dozens of different types of birds, lizards, frogs, bugs, etc. He did a fantastic job. We paid extra for the turtle nesting tour, knowing it was only the second night of the nesting season and we might not see anything. Raquel was our guide and we were able to see five different green sea turtles that had come up on the beach to nest. It was really incredible. The only thing that could have been improved was communication ahead of time. We had a vague idea of what the tour included, but didn't know specifics or times. We also had a few questions we communicated beforehand that we struggled to get a clear answer to. It might just have been the language barrier. Overall we really enjoyed the Tortuguero expedition.
