Getting There

  • Bus

    From San Jose, take a bus from Terminal Caribe to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. Buses leave throughout the day, and the journey takes approximately two hours and costs around $6. Upon arrival at the bus station in Puerto Viejo, transfer to another bus heading to Chilamate, which takes about 10 minutes and costs approximately $0.75. Alight at Chilamate School, cross the road, and walk about 300 meters down the dirt road, cross the bridge, and the retreat's small gate will be on the right.

  • Taxi

    From the Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui bus station, taxis are readily available to take you directly to Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat. The taxi ride typically costs between $6 and $8. Alternatively, a taxi from La Fortuna to the retreat will cost around $60. Taxis are a convenient option, especially if you have luggage or prefer a direct route.

  • Driving

    If driving from San Jose, you can approach Chilamate from either the east or the west. The western route offers spectacular views but involves steep and winding roads. The eastern route, via Highway 32 through Braulio Carrillo National Park, is generally faster and less challenging. Once you see the sign for Centro Educativo de Chilamate (Chilamate School) turn before the school and Adventuras del Sarapiqui. The parking lot is 100 meters before the bridge. From the parking lot, walk over the bridge and the entrance to the Retreat is 200 meters on the right.
