Discover more about Golfito National Wildlife Refuge

The Golfito National Wildlife Refuge, nearly surrounding the town of Golfito, stands as a testament to Costa Rica's commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Established in 1986, primarily to safeguard the town's water supply, the refuge has since become a sanctuary for an astounding array of wildlife and plant species. Sharing its northern boundary with Piedras Blancas National Park, it forms a crucial biological corridor, contributing to the region's rich biodiversity. The refuge is characterized by its evergreen forests, where trees can reach heights of up to 45 meters, nourished by the region's heavy rainfall, especially between May and November. These forests are home to a diverse collection of plant life, including the iconic silk cotton tree and ancient cycads, offering a glimpse into the earth's prehistoric past. As you explore the refuge, keep an eye out for the vibrant wildlife that calls it home. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the presence of scarlet macaws, parrots, brown pelicans, and various tanager species. The refuge also provides habitat for all four native Costa Rican monkey species: Central American squirrel monkey, white-headed capuchin, mantled howler, and Geoffroy's spider monkey. Lucky visitors may also spot anteaters, agoutis, pacas, and even elusive jaguars. The refuge offers several trails for exploration, catering to different fitness levels and interests. The Radio Tower Trail is a challenging five-hour hike, while the Playa Cacao trail offers stunning views of the Golfo Dulce. Numerous shorter trails crisscross the forest, providing opportunities for shorter, more leisurely hikes.
