Discover more about Palais Présidentiel

Located in the Plateau district of Abidjan, the Palais Présidentiel serves as the primary residence and office of the President of Côte d'Ivoire. Designed by French architect Pierre Dufau, with assistance from Jean-Maurice Lafon, its construction was commissioned by Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the first president of Côte d'Ivoire, and was completed in 1962. The palace was built to represent the country's sovereignty and modernization following its independence. The Palais Présidentiel is more than just a residence; it's a complex of buildings including the president's private residence, and offices. The architectural style reflects a blend of classic and modern design elements. The palace's interior was decorated by renowned artists, featuring paintings by Bernard Buffet, sculptures by René Collamarini and Louis Dideron, and tapestries by Jean Lurçat. While Yamoussoukro became the political capital in 1983, the Palais Présidentiel in Abidjan remains the de facto residence of the head of state. Although it is not always open to the public, its presence is a reminder of Côte d'Ivoire's journey as an independent nation.
